When we decided that we would be setting out on this adventure, I knew we needed a vehicle that could handle what we were about to throw at it.  It not only needed to be able to comfortably accomidate all of us, but it needed to be able to power through anything we could throw at it.  In my professional life, I work for DCS , a company that specialized in converting Ford and Chevy pick ups to Dodge Cummins engines.  I thought to myself, what would be better, a Ford Excursion with a Dodge Cummins powerplant.  It would have the comfort and drivability of a Ford, with the reliability of the legendary Cummins engine.  I searched far and wide.  Our budget wasnt huge, so I had to be thrifty.  Finally after searching all over the country, I found this 2003 Forrest Green Eddie Bauer Edition in Seattle WA for a very good price.   The shop I bought it from couldnt get it started, so the owner traded it it ASIS.  I did a little dealing, and sight unseen I paid for it and had it shipped over to Kalispell, MT.

It arrived here, missing the stereo, third row seats, and the front seats didnt match the middle row seats.  Needless to say, it needed some work!  We tinkered around with it, and discovered that the reason it wasnt starting was the Ford PATS(Antitheft system) had been triggered.  I towed it over to the local Ford Dealership and had a couple new keys made, and viola, it started!  That did not deter me from my original plan to convert this to a Cummins, but it allowed me to drive it for a while and while worked out the other bugs a used vehicle might have.  It got new brakes, a transmision flush, and fresh fluids all the way around. This also allowed me time to gather the necessary parts to get the conversion done.  Around the first of April 2015 I pulled it into my garage to complete the conversion.  I had aquired an engine that had been rebuild before the 2003 Dodge truck met its maker, and got a good deal on the engine out of Texas.

It definitely took some time.  Since we are pretty busy by nature with all the kids activities, Harmony's daycare and my job, it wasn't an overnight process.  There were alot of late nights sitting in the engine bay with a headlamp, electrical tape and a pair of scissors.  I cleaned out the engine bay, painted and protected it.  While I had it in the garage I took some extra time and ripped out the entire interior and shampoo'd the carpets, and cleaned it thouroughly.  I threw in a new headunit with GPS, covered the seats with Coverking seat covers so they all match and added a Yakima Megawarrior Roof basket with 10' crossbars to accomidate our 6 paddleboards.  Finally about mid June it was backing out of the garage ready for some testing!
